A set of binders containing detailed descriptions
of the collection of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts is one of
the most frequently consulted resources in the Reading Room of The Pierpont
Morgan Library. The descriptions, For many years, this documentation was available only in paper form. Now it is accessible to all users of CORSAIR. We have chosen to present the material in the form of PDF files to preserve and share the historical layers of scholarship evident in the annotations and additions. However, the scholarship represented in the descriptions may have been superseded, and the information varies in thoroughness and accuracy. Researchers are encouraged to use this resource, but with caution. The additional bibliographies, which are updated regularly, contain references to books and articles that have come to our attention since 1989. While efforts have been made to identify significant new scholarship and to provide accurate citations, the bibliographies are intended to be a starting point for research, rather than a definitive list. As always, researchers should verify all references. We welcome references to scholarly publications that have escaped our notice. Please email citations to msbibl@morganlibrary.org Links from CORSAIR Records The descriptions and bibliographies are linked to CORSAIR records for individual manuscripts. The simplest way to find the CORSAIR record for a manuscript is to perform a keyword search for the manuscript's accession number. For example, to search for M.69, enter: OSIN "ms m.69" The OSIN search code searches the accession number field, which is unique for each manuscript. If you do not know the accession number, you can also search for a manuscript by title, artist, author, provenance, genre, and many other parameters. For more information, see Research on Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts. Once you have found the CORSAIR record for a manuscript, click on the "Links" field to retrieve the page containing links to manuscript descriptions and bibliographies (see sample linking page). Viewing the Descriptions Manuscript descriptions and bibliographies are presented as PDF files. The descriptions range in length from one to several dozen pages. To minimize the time required to open these files, each description has been divided into separate PDF files, none containing more than three pages. A single PDF file is used for each additional bibliography. (Note, however, that additional bibliographies are not provided for all manuscripts.) Numbering irregularities in the page ranges given for the PDF files reflect the pagination of the originals. [1] is used to denote unnumbered pages, e.g. pages 1, [1], 2. After viewing the PDF files, you may return to the CORSAIR record for the manuscript, or perform a new search. The manuscript descriptions were scanned from the
originals; the additional bibliographies were converted from Microsoft
Word documents. Both resources are offered as PDF (Portable Document
Format) files. Adobe Acrobat Reader® software is needed to view
or print these files. Many computers already have Adobe Acrobat®
installed; if your computer does not, you may download the software
free of charge at the Adobe® site. |
